The talented singer Lila Downs put on a mesmerizing performance at the Wiltern Theatre last night.
This was a great musical event with different styles, some evocative of a another time period of a glamour and romance and at times made you feel like you where at the opera.
Lila donned a beautiful Mexican style floral yellow skirt and floral top, with her two long black braids, gold earrings and gold arm bands ,and black bootie shoes..creating an earthy beauty , a vision of a Ranchera queen with powerful vocals.
The show was brought together by eight musicians backing her up, Pecados y Milagros ("Sins and Miracles") in collaboration with her husband and band-directing saxophonist Paul Cohen, They fused a magestive show of Ranchera themed music. The sold out show had the crowd lined up all around the Wiltern all the way back to the parking lot.
Lila Downs did a beautiful rendition of "Dios Nunca Muere" were she communes with God, and refers to all the violance going on in Mexico,as well as singing a few songs in various indigenous languages.
Lila Downs did 2 encore performances for a crowd that could not get enough of her, singing and vocalizing "ahua"s along with her.
Lila had couples dancing and showing so much love to the singer who seemed to be a bit overwhelmed, "Ay caramba, quanto Carino" , (Ay caramba, how much affection)" and she shook hands with the lucky few that were in the front row.
A very fun show that made you want to put some hairs on your chest and drink some mescalito and dance all night.
