Copro/Nason Gallery

Kustom-made alterna-pop

Street, sci-fi, fantasy and moody metaphysics all converge on Copro/Nason’s walls.

The gallery, a bungalow-type space at the western edge of the Bergamot complex, has a laid-back feel, partly due to the friendly staff, but mostly the result of the playful work on display. Most of the artists in the Copro/Nason stable have a clear patron saint—Edward Gorey—though some seem kindred spirits with the likes of Salvador Dali and the Surrealists. And all practice under the banner of a sub-culture that has roots in the Kustom-made, hot-rodding movement of the '50s. The recent group show “Next-Gen” featured embracing skeletons alongside swashbuckling neon cartoons while slithering steel snakes lorded over the center of the gallery. And the concurrent two-man exhibition "Trainwreck" featured Nathan Fox’s ass-kicking bunnies and Paul Chatem’s multi-armed, peg-legged train conductors. —Melissa Lo
