Open since 1965, LACMA has more than 100,000 pieces in its collection, ranging from classic antiquities to the best of Southern California's contemporary artists.

A trip to the LACMA isn't complete without seeing Mary Cassatt's "Mother About to Wash Her Sleepy Child," Diego Rivera's "Flower Day" or David Hockney's "Mulholland Drive, The Road to the Studio." But LACMA is also home to impressive collections of photography, Asian and African works, prints, classical sculpture, costumes and textiles, German Expressionism, contemporary works and decorative arts. Visitors can see a sarcophagus from ancient Egypt, a Tiffany lamp, portraits from Rembrandt van Rijn, Japanese prints from the 19th century, paintings by Picasso and photos from Cindy Sherman all in the same day. The museum also acts as an interim home for a range of impressive exhibits throughout the year—some making stops at LACMA on worldwide tours, others unique to the museum. The treasures of King Tut, the works of Van Gogh, David Hockney's portraits and Magritte's surrealist pieces are some of the temporary exhibits at LACMA in recent years. For those salivating after seeing one too many still lifes, there's the cafeteria-style Plaza Cafe and the more upscale Pentimento Restaurant. LACMA hosts hundreds of lectures, film screenings, family programs and tours throughout the year, but it's the Friday-evening jazz concerts (in the central courtyard during the summer) and the Sunday live concerts (in the Bing Theater) that are the most popular.
