'Prove It On Me' a delightful cultural blend

On January 19, 2008

The play at Stella Adler gently balances race, money and -- most of all -- family (and its foibles)

  • Prove It On Me

    Address: 6773 Hollywood Boulevard [ map ]

    Phone: 323-960-7721

    Hours: Fridays, Saturdays 8 p.m.; Sundays 3 p.m.

    Type: The Arts, Stage Performances

  • Cost: General admission: $30

    Parking: Hollywood & Highland complex

Tips: Rounding out your evening: 4-hour parking at the Hollywood/Highland complex is $2. Since you live at high speed, you'll want to arrive on Hollywood Boulevard fifteen minutes early and head to Stefano's Two Guys From Italy (6705 Hollywood Boulevard) for a ginormous slice of mushroom pizza for around $3. After the standing ovation, hit the Pig 'N Whistle (6714 Hollywood Boulevard).

Before the lights go down on this one, inhale large because you'll forget to breathe until you come out of your seat for the standing ovation. That's my advice, and I'm sticking to it.

Especially if you've had it with the re-runs and reality shows, you need to get down to the Stella Adler theater for some of the freshest entertainment in Shaky Town.
Prove It On Me
"Prove It On Me" (from the 1924 Ma Rainey "Prove It On Me Blues") is a play (by Dee Jae Cox) with music (by Michele Weiss) that juggles race, gender, money, and multi-layered family secrets while showing us what love can be when you divorce it from cultural taboo.

As Harlem Renaissance club headliner Georgia, Sweet Baby J'ai channels attitude, a riveting stage presence, and a voice that fondles, wheels, and wrings out the blues. If there were a Mensa for singers, she'd be a member.  She and the white socialite flapper who loves her (Aynsley Bubbico) make kinetic art together.

The music is flawless--classic, innovative, accessible--and supports the storyline seamlessly. (If you are unlucky enough to miss the play, at least get the CD, which has the unabridged songs.)

Deborah Kellar as the unforgettable Aunt Josie will put a spell on you--you'll wish everyone had one of her, and not because of hugs and cookies (think incantations and gin). I wanted to bring her home with me. She wouldn't come. But, hey, maybe you'll have better luck.

I'd like to mention a few flaws, but if there were any, the quick-moving razzle-dazzle blinkered me. This is one delightful gem of an evening. Treat yourself.

I also really enjoyed the play, but one great character that wasn't mentioned was Lula Bailey, played by Melinda Edmonson. She had a smaller part, but what a great, glowing stage-presence she has!
