Takin' it to the street(s)
There are some days to avoid the heroically dense intersection of legendary Hollywood Boulevard and it's north/south sister, Highland Avenue.
Saturday is not that day. One word: elephants. (Wait for it...)Hollywood Highland
Hollywood & Highland Center is pulling together a one-day festival of what is, arguably, some truly amazing local talent: music, photography, art and film included.
Sure, the Center once took some heat for turning in on itself, but what's better proof of losing that perception by asking local artists to come to a swanky address and show their wares. Or their chords. Or their brush strokes.
From 1-10pm on Saturday new art talent and established artists such as Rory Wilson, Mark Owens, Kimme Buzzelli, Brandy Flower/Hit+Run, John Pham (below right) Ben Loiz & Carolina Chaves, The Dutch Press, Richard Leigh/Grotesque, Katsuo Design, Michael Coleman and Imaginary Foundation.
(Elephants?! Wait for it...)
It's Live LA '07 -- and that's just the artwork.
Midnight Movies are the headliners at 9pm (sponsored by friends at LA Weekly, Indie 103.1 and, sigh, 944 Magazine).
This whole event is free (and the parking is only $2 -- if you remember to validate), btw.
That makes it a buck cheaper than getting your picture taken with last night's Wonder Woman or a tangled-mass Chewbacca out on the Bouly.
Now about those elephants... Remember those artists mentioned above? Some were asked to reinterpret the mega-phant that graces our H&H.
Prints are available, but reinterpreting someone else's reinterpretations can be rewarding in its own way.
Either way, it's inevitable: you'll stop for the Papa Beard's, you'll stay for the true local talent, but you will always reinterpret that elephant when you pass the center.
