Hidden hotspot Red Buddha Lounge closed in December without any explanation. We thought owner Gianni Capaldi had moved back to Scotland, never to see regulars like the Duff sisters and the Jackass boys again. But the closing was temporary. He brought in promoter Brad Hoss in as his business partner and together they remodeled the space and renamed it Play, which Hoss says was inspired by the play button on a DVD player. Gone is the red-and-black motif. The decor is now presented light blues, earthy tones and silver accents. They've also expanded the patio and the dance floor and added seating to better serve their
 I loved the original Red Buddha - intimate, nice vibe, different than other nightspots. But will try the new place next time I'm in L.A. - Gianni's a wonderful not your run of the mill wannabe LAster, so I'm sure the place still reflects that.

Posted by Miran-G on 03/17/07 04:57PM PDT The former Red Buddha, recolored and reimagined as yet another slick, painfully trendy nightspot with an obnoxiously self-important staff and all the charm and character of an airport lounge. Lots of beautiful idiot girls, but good luck getting in if you're not one yourself, or don't have a couple with you. I did, but my buddy made the mistake of showing up solo, and the doorman--imagine a cheezier, oilier Lorenzo Lamas--kept letting chicks in front of him. After cooling his heels on the sidewalk for an hour, he finally gave up and headed over to the pornstar bash at Boardner's (where, from what he tells me, he had a much better time than we did.) Nothing special here, just another "club-of-the-week"; once the newness wears off, everbody will back to their usual haunts...
