"Gomorrah" is down and dirty, gritty in its mass of workaday details and shot almost documentary-like, albeit taking every visual advantage of unusual downscale architecture (even Italy's housing projects for the poor, it seems, were built with aesthetic ingenuity). People get whacked, eventually, but not until after Garrone takes his dolce time showing us what their lives, thoughts and business are all about.
