Vintage Fashion Expo May 10-11

If it's true that everyone and their mother loves vintage, then the timing of The Vintage Fashion Expo's revival couldn't be more appropriate.

All eras (and price ranges) will be represented, from puffy shoulders to shoulder pads, at the 85 vendors setting up shop at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium this weekend.
In addition to raiding racks for Chanel, Schiaparelli, Lanvin, Bill Blass, Bonnie Cashin, Halston and Claire McCardell, check out the fashion show at 1:30pm on both days. And moms with any group buying tickets get in free.
May 10-11, Sat., 10:30am-6pm; Sun., 11am-5pm. Tickets $20 ($10 if pre-purchased). At 1855 Main St., Santa Monica. www.vintageexpo.com

Poketo Sample Sale May 10

Is there a wocket in your pocket? How about replacing it with a Poketo wallet instead? Poketo—recognizable mostly by its limited edition T-shirts and wallets designed by up-and-coming artists and sold at hipster, artsy fartsy stores like Giant Robot—is having a sale on Saturday.

Shirts, wallets, stationary, planners and even plates covered in Poketo's cutsey-cool graphics will be $5-$10 from 10am-5pm on 5/10 at 510 Hewitt Street. Hmm...if there's some sort of numerological significance here, we're still trying to figure it out. Sat., May 10, 10am-5pm. At 510 S. Hewitt St., Suite 506, L.A.

Beso(me) Mucho, Miranda Kerr
Beso (the Eva Longoria backed restaurant) welcomed a throng of random celebs and beautiful no-namers through its doors to fête the launch of Victoria's Secret's newest fragrance "Heavenly Kiss" this week.

Vicky S's supercute supermodel Miranda Kerr wore Balenciaga and her signature dimples while exchanging air smooches with Chris Evans, Brandon Barash, Shane West, Christina Milian, Brittny Gastineau, Jay Chadrasekhar (wtf?) and Jeremy Piven.

Given the night's theme, there was a lot of kissing to be seen. Especially of the ass-variety. Two very fashionable reality TV show alums—though we admit we couldn't hear their conversation over Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer" (incidentally, our karaoke song of choice)—were obviously fawning over each others fabulousness. Chris Evans took literal to the next level and wore a T-shirt featuring two neon lesbians lip-to-lip. And the staff was very accommodating to a few unidentifiable VIPs, leaving entire trays of hors d'oeurves just for them. Not that it bothered us.

Which brings us to our only complaint of the night. The "aphrodisiac-inspired" Chambord cocktails tasted like cough syrup...perhaps someone was anticipating an outbreak of sore throats considering all the kissing in the air?

We checked and so far, no cases of mono have been reported.

Ante Up at Alice Temperley

Gift cards are sooo passé. If you really want to really get classy (we use the word "classy" here because we can—it was banned from usage at our last job on the ridiculous basis that it's a word used only by "hookers and construction workers") and impress someone with a gift that took absolutely no thought or effort to pick out, this is for you.

The Temperley gift coin (pictured above) is available in gold, valued at $1,000, or silver, worth $500, at the Alice Temperley store on Melrose Place. It even comes with its own pouch and gift box.

Spring Fling
Out with the shiver and in with the shimmer. Makeup artist Kristie Streicher tells us how.

Though the weather has bounced from warm to freezing to downright blazing, it is Spring. And even if your wardrobe hasn't been able to reflect that consistently, your makeup can. So, we caught up with Warren Tricomi's makeup artist Kristie Streicher—who calls Julia Roberts, Lauren Conrad, Juliana Margolis and Molly Sims clients—to find out how to keep your look fresh as these supposed April showers that must be happening somewhere.

Streicher says:

"Spring is all about color and shimmer. I love the look of shimmer on eyes & cheeks. Lips are bright and bold. Skin is glowing and flawless."

"Metals in sheer copper, gold and silver shimmer beautifully on the eye, while lips are bold with pink or fuschia. Try Face Stockholm Eye Dusts in 'Curious,' 'Treasure' and 'Storm.'  Skip the lip liner and instead, layer on the colour gently, applying with your finger to get a natural, vibrant look."

"Dior Addict Ultra-Shine Lipcolour in Shiniest 'Pomegranate' is a favorite. Pair your pink lips with a doll-like blush.Nothing says spring like a bright wash of pink on cheeks. Lighter skins will glow with bubble-gum shades and darker skins will look luminous in richer tones."

"Lorac blush in Desire looks great on light to medium skin tones and has just the right amount of shimmer.
For those richer tones I love Kevyn Aucoin Pure Powder Glow in 'Neolita.'"

"Get some colour back into your face with the help of a light-diffusing foundation. This will provide the coverage you need as well as give your skin a healthy, dewy appearance. Try Vincent Longo's Liquid Canvas Dew Finish Foundation in 'Warm Beige.' It's part foundation and part moisturizer so it not only creates a flawless complexion but also protects against sun damage through the built-in SPF 15."

Opening Ceremony Opens Its Second Floor

The long awaited second floor at Opening Ceremony has opened at last. And it's a wonderland of symbiosis. Residing side-by-side in retail harmony is what Opening Ceremony refers to as a "mini-mall." Which we feel is a misnomer since there is NOT a Korean-run nail salon that takes walk-ins and will give you the best French pedicure ever for less than $30.

This mini-mall is an ultra-stylish series of rooms, each dedicated to a particular hard-to-find über-hip line. Two-toned wood floors lead to clusters of coolness straight outta the Big Apple like Exquisite Costume's exquisite vintage, military-inspired men's line Nom de Guerre and Mayle for girly-girls. Another room is dedicated to German undie makers Shiesser. Adjacent to that is the only source for Swedish-based Acne's full line of clothing—including a new line of shoes inspired by the designer's recent trip to Africa—and Top Shop and Opening Ceremony Women share a large center space.

Most of the owners were called in to personally decorate their alloted parcel of square footage—ironing boards are display stands for Schiesser's tanks and tees and Acne used rows of Sweden's most popular door nob (pretty, clear glass orbs) as wall art.

On our way out a built-in diorama-like jewelry case filled with Gerard Tully's "Predator and Prey" jewelry collection had us enchanted with its 18k-plated heads of lions, walrus, bears, and other carnivores laying in wait on a bed of faux moss and pieces of drift wood. We were told that the gold is designed to wear off eventually and expose the silver underneath, giving it a custom finish that continues to develop with age.

Too bad we can't afford them.

Opening Ceremony Women. There's a couch upholstered in the same fabric as a jacket and skirt from the current collection. No indication of whether or not you can buy all three in a set.

Top Shop and Cadbury chocolate bars. We don't really get the connection.

Mayle. So many darling dresses...sigh.

And for the guys...Nom de Guerre.

California Rising Sample Sale April 26

California Rising
—purveyors of organic cotton and hemp T-shirts, dresses, hoodies, collared shirts and leggings (sold at pricey joints like Fred Segal, Saks and Neiman Marcus)—is selling samples of its Winter '07 and Spring '08 this Saturday in downtown L.A. Prices are 50-75% off retail, so $95 T-shirts will be $20, hoodies that are usually $140 will be $40 and caps will be a very reasonable $15. "Vintage" (quotes are theirs) will also be in the mix...we're guessing that's a cute way of saying that pieces from seasons past will also be on site.

This one's open to the public and has merch for all you guys out there too. Early arrival is requested. Sat., April 26, 9am-1pm, 431 Colyton Ave., L.A.

Fetherston's Newest Film "A Dreamy Wander"

Finally the full-length version of Erin Fetherston's newest collaboration with photographer Ellen Von Unwerth! The latest doll-like star of Fetherston's film is none other than Zooey Deschanel, in all her adorable wide blue-eyed, glory—who, on a side note, we really fell in love with after seeing her sing "'Til there was you" while accompanying herself on the ukulele at an art show last year.

Yet again, Deschanel charms our socks off (even though we really don't wear socks, ever) as she prances about through the woods to a soundtrack cool enough for a Coppola.
