Trebek snaps back from heart attack with Pepsi and Snickers; Ortiz poised to go from 'Ugly Betty' sister to psychotic mom
BY MARILY BECK and STACY JENEL SMITH
The heart attack that struck Alex Trebek several months back
certainly hasn't changed his life
Says the four-time Emmy winner, who's gearing up to start
the 25th year of "Jeopardy!," " I eat Diet Pepsi and Snickers for
breakfast every day -- that'll fire you up. I eat well at dinner, but
almost never eat lunch. I stopped taking my medicine, though I might
start it up again just so the doctor doesn't get ticked off. I
should exercise, but I don't and...
"My motto is 'If I die I die,' though I don't like to say
that too often because it upsets my wife."
Trebek, who'll be hosting the "Jeopardy! College
Championship" beamed from the University of Wisconsin at Madison from
May 5 through 16, is looking forward to taking his wife and teenage
son and daughter for a tour of his native Canada during the show's
hiatus this summer. While "Jeopardy!" is in production, he puts in
11-hour days, two days a week, sitting in on staff meetings and
studying questions he'll be asking contestants during taping of the
show.
Asked how he's feeling, the 68-year-old Trebek responds,
"Okay. Fine. Not bad for an old Canadian dude."
THE VIDEOLAND VIEW: With “Ugly Betty” returning to the ABC lineup tonight (4/24), costar Ana Ortiz notes that the troupe will be
wrapping up production on this strange, strike-interrupted season
after shooting one more episode. “We had such a short amount of time
to do the last five episodes, we’ve literally been shooting two at a
time,” she reports. “They’re going to be so good I can’t tell you.
Larry King is on one which is such a hoot.”
The “Ugly Betty” sister tells us she won’t be slowing down. “I’m
going to Vancouver the first week of May to shoot a TV movie, a true
story, with Judy Reyes who’s on ‘Scrubs.’ It’s called ‘Little Girl
Lost’ and I play a little bit of a psychotic, not the perfect mother
by any means. It should be fun to have such a different character.”
Anna is also taking to heart her role as the celebrity face of
the Escape Your Stress campaign touting Johnson & Johnson’s Melt Away
Stress product line. “They actually sent a whole bunch of the stuff
to the set of ‘Ugly Betty’ and the whole cast is completely addicted.”
AN EVENT TO REMEMBER: Gonzo comic Judy Tenuta – aka The Love
Goddess – says she was as shocked as anyone else to be invited to
conduct the Junior Philharmonic Orchestra of California at the 71st
Anniversary Concert Spectacular
on May 4, 3:30 p.m at the Shrine Auditorium. “They called and said
‘We need The Love Goddess to come on and twirl our baton,’” quips
Tenuta. “Helloooo, are they totally losing it? Did they think my last
name was Bernstein or something? No, it was great. Every year they
have celebrities do it and this year it’s going to be Stacy Keach,
Timothy Bottoms and myself. The first half of the show we’re doing
popular songs like Tchaikovsky and something from ‘West Side Story,’
but then the other half is the battle of the batons between me, Stacy
and Timothy.” She adds tickets are free to the event. For more info,

Meanwhile, Tenuta fans will be glad to hear she’s just releasing
a compilation CD. “It’s called ‘Buy This Again, Pigs,’” she says.
“When I did my very first album ‘Buy this, Pigs’ in 1987 they didn’t
have CDs… Oh my god, I’m making myself sound like Bea Arthur or
something – ‘And my first album came out when Nixon was getting a
lobotomy…’ intones Tenuta in a perfect Bea Arthur impression.
“Anyway, people were always asking ‘Where can I get the CD?’ so I
decided to take my favorite bits from that album.” Check out

BARE FACTS: Adhir Kalyan, who plays the Pakistani Muslim
exchange student in a small Wisconsin town on The CW’s “Aliens In
America,” goes for something completely different in the
currently-shooting feature comedy, “Fired Up” He lets us know, “I’m
playing a gay male cheerleader by the name of Brewster.” Two of the
writers from “Aliens In America” are behind “Fired Up” – hence the
engaging Kalyan’s involvement. “It’s kind of ‘Wedding Crashers’
meets ‘Bring It On,’” he says. He also says, “You don’t actually see
Brewster cheering, which is disappointing to me, but probably for the
best for the audience. But you do see him nude.”
The South Africa-born actor of Indian extraction says that naked
scene has already been shot. Did it make him uncomfortable? “No, it
was very liberating. I do see the appeal.”
In fact, it’s not the first time he’s appeared sans clothing on
camera. His “Aliens in America” character, Raja, walked through a
locker room in the buff. “My managers and agents keep getting me
roles where I’m nude,” he says. “You’d think I would tell them to
stop doing that, wouldn’t you, but I haven’t yet.” The series
returns Sunday (4/27).
