The Mercedes-Benz L.A. Fall Fashion Week drew some big Hollywood names.

BY JENNY PETERS

All Dolled up, with somewhere to go

Sean "P. Diddy" Combs sucked a lollipop, Quincy Jones clutched the white sweat shirt thrown to him by a scantily clad burlesque dancer, and Dr. Dre snuggled in the front row next to ex-Doll Carmit Bachar. Finally, just as it ended, the Mercedes-Benz L.A. Fall Fashion Week drew some big Hollywood names.

Massive insanity reigned at Smashbox Studios late Thursday night as fashionistas of all shapes and sizes preened in the crowded front lounge, then formed a serious, back-stabbing scrum in the attempt to get inside the Main Stage venue, where Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin launched her Pussycat Dolls Shhh lingerie collection. It was quite the show, complete with scantily clad models in tiny thongs, push-up bras and see-through mesh camisoles, as well as those burlesque dancers themselves, led by singer Nicole Scherzinger.

Once the runway show was complete, the girls did a set of their songs, much to the dismay of many of the suddenly bored fashionistas in the crowd (we spotted people sneaking out in droves or concentrating on their PDAs). As one sniffed, "It would be better to sit through this if they were actually talented."

And what did clothing mogul/musician/actor/gazillionaire P. Diddy think of Antin's first foray into design? "Do you want to take a photo with me?" was his deflected response when asked what he thought of the show.

Designs with eco-friendly bent

The "Green Initiative" at the fashion week shows was led by producer Mikey Koffman, who presented six designers with an eco-friendly bent. Sure, it was still steamy hot in the airless Stage One at Smashbox Studios, but the little potted bamboo shoots that lined the runway surely helped bring in some oxygen; and the so-called "Humanitarian Fashion Show" offered up some fall looks that any econista would be happy to wear. Designer "M" (aka Simplicio Michael Luis) led off with his cool M the Movement line of men's jackets, sweaters, jeans and shirts all constructed of sustainable materials, then Lady Muse by Mathilde offered up rich tapestry Edwardian-styled coats for both men and women, made of what she called "rescued fabrics." Shown with leggings and retro heels (on her) or slightly flared slacks (on both sexes), the luxuriously beautiful coats were the show's highlight.

Andira Rain tees came next, a wacky mix of "Flashdance" '80s-inspired neon leggings (complete with holes torn down the sides) paired with T-shirts with laces crisscrossing the backs; more leggings (a common motif of the week's shows) came along with Canadian designer Barbara Boswell's lilikoi, who put them under over-the-knee dresses made of soy, organic cotton, bamboo and linen.

For their segment, the Vintage China duo of Andrew Wong and Deacon Yu sent a crowd-pleasing denim evening gown with a fitted bodice and huge bottom (including a train) made of crazily patched-together pieces of light and dark denim down the runway, after showing a series of casual looks for men and women. Lastly, Rene Geneva Design brought her corset-centric designs (think cinched evening gowns and minidresses) made with handmade organic textiles. As vegetarian and environmental actress/activist Amy Smart, who graced the front row along with Anna Getty and Shar Jackson, smiled after giving the six a standing ovation. "There were a lot of stylish earth-friendly looks to choose from, weren't there?"
