From the sounds of it, Confederacy could be an outpost aimed at attracting mullet-wearing, rebel flag-waving gunslingers-who may or may be interested in a meet-and-greet with Zed's basement-dwelling gimp. However, rather than an homage to the South, Confederacy is a new boutique catering to rebels of the generic Westside trends.
Occupying 5,000 square feet on Hollywood Boulevard, a sloth's walk from Cobras and Matadors and American Apparel, Confederacy is a gallery/cafe/clothing boutique-a novel idea that even waxes literary, deriving its name from John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces. Wunderkind powers united to create such a venture, celeb stylist Ilaria Urbinati and Danny Masterson are the minds beneath the 16-foot ceilings. Exposed brick walls and negative space aid in the circa '20s-'40s New York vibe; vintage phone booths double as dressing rooms, complete with working old school phones that ring the front desk when the occupant needs to swap a size. Alexander Wang, Zac Posen, Mayle, Band of Outsiders are among the long list of stylish threads to chose from. If clothing isn't your bag that particular day, peruse the newsstand with a cup of joe in the courtyard cafe, take a gander in the gallery (first exhibit, etchings by Julian Schnabel) or consider the number of books and special edition objets des arts. As with anything fashion forward, collaborations are eminent, two of which are already in the works. Urbinati is designing a womens ready-to-wear line with Rebecca Minkoff, and a private label line of bespoke suits with Alber Hammond.
