First there was the magazine Giant Robot and the store to sell the magazine. Then the editors, Eric Nakamura and Martin Wong, expanded their Asian-American dynasty with GR2, a gallery space located across the street from the store. Now, they go a step further with Gr/eats (next to GR2), which supplies sustenance for friends, fans, showcasing artists and anyone else who happens upon their mini-empire.

The cafe's Eames chairs and cafeteria-like lighting provide a minimalist pop-culture aesthetic reflected in the light, inexpensive food appropriate for any starving artist. Service may not be that experienced; however, the kitchen makes up for the long wait and language-challenged staff. Some dishes like fried rice and teriyaki salmon have an Asian slant, but fish tacos, penne marinara with angus beef meatballs and El Salvadoran vegetable paella are also on the menu. Nakamura and Wong may be into Asian and Asian-American pop culture, but they are equally into art from all backgrounds; similarly, Gr/eats' food-from-all-backgrounds mentality is as much about the duo's own personal tastes as it is about satisfying their melting-pot customers.
