Concorde Stage Coach on display @ Los Angeles Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles holds one of the world's most extensive collections of natural and cultural history with more than 35 million specimens and artifacts from around the globe. With three levels filled to the brim with everything from life-sized stuffed animals to dinosaurs bones to shimmering gems to creepy insects, you might have the urge to spend the night.

Step lightly as you enter NHM as not to disturb the T. Rex and Triceratops that separate two Habitat Halls. Turn left for life-sized African mammals, right for North American mammals, and be sure to check out the elephants and bears before heading upstairs to a remarkable display of bird specimens from all over the world. Pull out a drawer for an up close and personal encounter of their delicate wings.

The "First Place" display shows winning ribbons for "Longest Tail" from the Phoenix Fowl, and other great firsts from the bird world. The Ancient Latin American corridor overflows with art from Aztec, Maya, and Inca tribes, plus an educational touch screen called Visible Vault. There's also a T. Rex, Triceratops, and Carnotaurus on display before entering the Thomas The T. Rex Lab, where science folks in lab coats get down to the serious business of paleontology; preparing and assembling the fossil of the famous "Thomas."

On the ground floor, the corridors display photographs of the Natural History Museum's 1913 building and the current renovation from photographer Joshua White. In the Discovery Center and Insect Zoo, which is guarded by a huge polar bear, there are insects, spiders, snakes, and turtles on display. The Brazilian Salmon Tarantula is bigger than a human hand and the Pink Toed Tarantula is anything but cute. Also on display are Giant Tropical Cockroaches, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, and just beyond the "zoo," the Zuni Fetishes exhibit showcases 99 carvings from a collection of 3,951.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions and the Gem and Mineral Hall, the museum is also host to festive First Fridays, and will be celebrating "Darwin Year" with monthly variations on a theme.

NHM offers free admission to Los Angeles Unified Schools, and offers monthly lectures and classes. Children's educational programs and hands-on science programs such as "Adventures in Nature" are offered each winter/summer.
