Origami Vinyl's eagerly anticipated (hey, even Pete Townshend wants to know when they'll be open) official grand opening will take place this Friday afternoon (4/3/09) in Echo Park.
Brainchild of 8-year Echo Park resident Neil Schield, who also runs the exclusively digital label Origami Records (home to local artists Summer Darling and Wait.Think.Fast.), is celebrating Opening Day with a special 10% Off Everything sale -- that includes not only vinyl but limited edition Origami T-shirts and matching canvas tote bags designed and hand screenprinted by store staff.
We stopped by Origami a few days ago for a sneak peek of the venue. The interior is likely to be a work in progress right up until Friday's event, but the space is cozy, accessible and shows a lot of promise. There's vinyl mounted on the wall, cased in old wooden wine crates, and sorted alphabetically regardless of genre to keep things simple. The wall by the register holds 3 as-of-yet blank slates -- Upcoming Shows, New Releases, and Tickets -- just waiting to be filled in with all sorts of chicken soup for your indie-loving soul.
Aside from new vinyl (including music from local artists on consignment), Origami will sell record players and accessories, and will serve as a box office for shows at the Echo, Echoplex and Spaceland. Store hours will be 7 days a week "from Noon to Late," and there are plans to host listening parties, in-stores with local and touring acts, record release parties and special art exhibits.
It's not too early to start taking bets on how long before the store ends up in Rockville... Place your guess in the comments.
