Popkiller Dept officially opened its third location (1856 N. Vermont Ave.) in Los Feliz last night -- kicking off with a grand opening bash for the public.
The shop was packed to the Japanese fighting-fish gills with party guests poring over the Japanese-influenced store's vintage, new and kitsch merchandise (and then pouring out on to the street for some much needed air). Based on the massive turn-out, you'd never know the economy was in trouble -- something 35 year old owner Ricky Takizawa attributes to the store's fair prices.
Takizawa moved from Japan to Los Angeles in 1996 and opened the first Popkiller Dept six years ago. This is the third location, and he mingled among guests at the event, excited about his new venture. "I like this neighborhood. I was always looking for a spot in this location for forever -- since I opened the store on Sunset -- and I finally got this. I'm really happy about it."
Los Feliz resident, actor Tohoru Masamune (Heroes, Big Shots) was on hand to celebrate. "I'm here to support Japanese culture in Los Angeles," said Masamune. "I think it's important. I feel like I'm in Tokyo again. When you are in Japan, a lot of the stores are just like this and it's great. It's all so amazingly overstimulating." When we asked the Japanese American actor what he was eating as he munched on the soiree's curious and circular free hors d'oeuvres (served with the choice of free wine or Yebisu Japanese beer), Masamune said, "Once you have octopus balls, you don't go back." Duly noted.
Whether you have a hankering for a vintage rock t-shirt ($24) or "I Love You" candles ($7.50), Popkiller Dept has something for everyone -- and then some. One little girl at the party clutched a chocolate calculator ($8.50), while her parents perused the leather jackets ($165). Others were fascinated by the set of 7 moustaches you can purchase as a set ($6.80 ) -- one for each day of the week.
Put on a pair of Coors earrings ($8), a feathered hairband ($28) and a pair of "Nerd Glasses" ($3.80) and, really, what more do you need? But the fun doesn't stop there -- get your Japanese on with a culturally inspired mouse pad ($13), chopsticks ($2.80), Japanese candy (Nintendo Power Mints - $4.50), Japanese coasters ($3) and Japanese import CDs ($20). And, if you 'Just Say Yes,' why not a small pipe keychain ($3) or a Red Bull stash can ($13)?
Man, woman or child, whatever your fancy, from head ($32 fedoras/$36 70s sunglasses) to toe ($50 vintage shoes), you will find it in the artsy and trendy Los Feliz Village, home of the brand new Popkiller Dept.
