You might get déjà vu walking into the latest gastropub to hit Hollywood. That's because this brick-faced corner of the strip mall at Cahuenga and Selma Avenue was formerly coffeehouse Karma. But it's hops rather than beans that are a brewing here now.

Taking a page from gourmet dining, the experience at Stout is based on pairing beer with one of the nine custom burgers on the menu. What to drink with the signature Stout Burger with blue cheese, gruyere, rosemary bacon, caramelized onion and horseradish cream, for instance? Simply consult the pairings listed right next to it--hmm, perhaps a robust pale ale like the Dale's from Oskar Blues or something darker like the Canadian Unibroue Maudite? The only quibble is that the $10 burgers could be bigger, but take advantage of that extra belly room and fill it with a few of the 30 low priced small-batch beers.

Like the menu, the pub's design is simple but striking. The space is centered around a semi-circular bar constructed from reclaimed bricks that enclose an enormous polished-copper beer cooler and tap station. Ringing the bar is a second wood-topped counter for casual drinking, which is framed by a dramatic wooden overhang. The whole effect makes you feel like you're actually drinking inside a beer barrel. Two circular booths bookend the space, where dipsos can drink

and dine by the softened light of beer bottle chandeliers (assembled by one of the owners!).
