Seven Grand
Seven Grand

It's no secret that Downtown is loaded with all types of business folk during the daytime. So after a long, hard day at the office, all those 9-to-5ers are bound to get thirsty. And they're in luck because Downtown just happens to have some of the best happy hour specials in the city. Did someone say, bottoms up?

Seven Grand: It kind of looks a bar you might see in some remote part of the Midwest, with about a dozen or so mounted deer heads nailed to the wall. Still, Seven Grand is definitely one of the classier bars you'll find Downtown, and is usually swinging no matter what time of the day you walk in. Happy hour is 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays, and all night long on Monday. So what does that mean? How about $2 off any type of cocktails (we're talking Makers baby!), $1 off beer and wine, and margaritas that will cost you no more than $6. With those type of prices we may as well be in the Midwest.

Golden Gopher: Looking for an intimate, darkly lit place that's not quite a dive but still has a pretty decent happy hour? The Golden Gopher might not look like much from the outside, but what it does have is lots of character. Walk inside and you'll immediately lock eyes with the old school photo booth sitting right next to the bar. And yes, it does still work! Happy hour is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, and all night Mondays and Sundays beginning at 8 p.m. Well drinks are $5 and everything else is $2 off. Just don't forget to rub the belly of the golden gopher statue for good luck. Yes, there's even one of those! I told you this place has character.

417 W. 8th St., 213-614-8001

Broadway Bar: Not only does it adjoin the historic Orpheum Theatre in the heart of L.A.'s legendary theatre district, but it also has the look and feel of an elegant supper club straight out of 1940s Hollywood. That's why the Broadway Bar is one of the premier drinking establishments in Downtown. The fact that it has a pretty decent happy hour from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays through Thursdays, only helps its situation. Specials include $3 beer, $4 well drinks, and $3 off everything else. Bogart would be proud.

The Falls: If you work Downtown, The Falls is a great place to go for after work drinks with friends or co-workers. And if you can make it during happy hour, which happens every Sunday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m, and Fridays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., even better. Beer is $4, well drinks and shots are $5, and their specialty cocktails will cost you $6. As an added bonus, The Falls also has a live jazz jam every Monday beginning at 8:30 p.m. where guests can either play or just sit back and listen. And the best part is there's no cover.

Engine Co. No. 28: Now here's an interesting idea for a bar. Not only does Engine Co. No. 28 serve food inspired by traditional firehouse cooking, but the bar is also located in a gorgeously restored fire station from 1912! That alone should be reason enough to go visit. Oh yeah, the all-day happy hour is pretty sweet too. From 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week, you can get beer, wine, well drinks, and any one of their delicious appetizers for $5.

Casey's Irish Pub: Jameson and Guinness – are there two better words in the English language? If you're a serious drinker, this one's a no brainer, which is why you'll want to make your way over to Casey's Irish Pub on Grand Ave. At Casey's happy hour is everyday, Tuesdays to Saturdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. You heard right, 12 full hours of happiness! Some of the drink specials include $3 Pabst Blue Ribbons, $4 well drinks, $5 for Jameson, and $2 off all appetizers, like their tasty pub fries. But wait… there's more! Casey's even has something called "Irish Happy Hour" on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 p.m to 11:59 p.

Engine Co. No. 28
Engine Co. No. 28
m. – not quite a full hour but you get the idea. Specials include $2 off all Irish whiskeys, $1 off Guinness, Smithwick's and Harp, and $2 off Irish coffee (the kind with alcohol in it).

613 S. Grand Ave., 213-629-2353

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar: OK, I know what you're probably thinking. How can a place with "steakhouse" in its name have a decent happy hour? It's a fair question, but one that's easily answered when considering the fact that the happy hour at Fleming's is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, and features five of their best appetizers, cocktails and wines for only $6. Happy hour at a fancy steak house in Downtown – what's not to like?

800 W. Olympic Blvd., 213-745-9911

Suede Bar & Lounge: You know a place has class when it includes an outdoor humidor for those that want to enjoy a fine cigar. In fact, everything about Suede Bar & Lounge says class, from its dimly lit setting, to its strict dress code of business casual. Happy hour happens Monday through Friday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and includes beer, wine, well drinks, and most appetizers for $4. If you're looking for a romantic spot to take your date, Suede should definitely be at the top of the list.

404 S. Figueroa St., Suite 102; 213-489-3590

The Edison: Built in 1910, The Edison is an old power plant that once supplied electricity to all of Downtown. So when you walk inside it has kind of a Roaring 20s feel to it, with silent movies playing and random people dressed up in their best Prohibition-era attire. Happy hour is weeknights from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and includes a .35-cent cocktail (that's not a typo!), with half-priced drinks thereafter. They also have a happy hour food menu, which includes select appetizers for $5.

108 W. 2nd St., 213-613-0000

Weiland Brewery Underground: Why the name? For one, it's located in the basement of the City National Bank Building in Downtown's Financial District. That may seem like kind of a strange bar location, but when you consider the fact that Weiland Brewery Underground has a wide selection of over 100 California wines, it all makes perfect sense. After all, they don't call it a wine cellar for nothing! Happy hour is everyday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., then once again from 10 p.m. to close (bonus!). It includes all of their specialty Weiland Brewery beer for $2.50, as well as selected items on their food menu for under $4.

505 S. Flower Street, Suite B-410; 213-622-1125

Salvage Bar & Lounge: Salvage is different from most bars for the simple reason that's it built almost entirely from other stuff (hence the name). Walk inside and you'll be instantly drawn to the hodgepodge of various doors, windows, marble slabs, and fixtures that make up the strange-looking interior. So what kind of happy hour does a quirky place like this have? – an oddly normal one, believe it or not. It happens every Monday thru Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., and includes $4/$5 draft beers, $5 house wines and well drinks, and $6 “you call it” drinks.

717 W. Seventh St., 90017; 213-688-7755

Lucky Strike: Why does Lucky Strike L.A. Live call their happy hour, lucky hour? Well aside from the obvious name reference (aren't they clever?), their lucky hour will make any average Joe off the street feel much more fortunate (for lack of a better word) than he did when he walked in. Drink specials include all well drinks for $5, martinis for $6, selected draft beers for $3, glasses of their house wine for $5, and lucky shots for $4. Lucky hour happens every Monday thru Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
