Silver Lake may be the hipster capital of the Eastside, but that shouldn't deter buttoned down Westsiders from going there – especially if they're in the mood for some cheap happy hour drinks. Here are some Silver Lake bars you'll definitely want to check out.
Thirsty Crow: If you're the type to only order top shelf liquor, then you're going to love this place. With over 100 whiskeys, including over 60 small batch bourbons, as well as a cocktail menu that utilizes fresh squeezed juices, in-house infusions, and homemade shrubs, the Thirsty Crow is a haven for whiskey lovers. Happy hour is every Monday through Saturday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and includes several of their specialty cocktails for $5.
2939 W. Sunset Blvd., 90026; 323-661-6007
Cha Cha Lounge: You've probably been to plenty of bars in your day, but I guarantee you never stepped foot inside one that had a life-size cut out of Willie Nelson. It's definitely not something you'd expect to see at a Hawaiian-themed tiki bar. But the Cha Cha Lounge prides itself in being, well… let's just say unique. Happy hour is every day from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and includes $3 well drinks, as well as Pabst Blue Ribbons for $2.
2375 Glendale Blvd., 90039; 323-660-7595
Barbarella Neighborhood Bar & Kitchen: It's big and spacious, the dinner menu includes some of the best mac & cheese you'll ever taste (fact!), and all types of California micro brews are on tap and ready to be poured. So what else is there to like about Barbarella Neighborhood Bar & Kitchen? How about the happy hour? (Bet you didn't see that one coming!) It happens every Monday thru Thursday from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.
2609 N. Hyperion Ave., 90027; 323-644-8000
Malo: A lot of bars host happy hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Malo in Silver Lake is no different. But aside from the discounted prices on its assortment of specialty cocktails, Malo also serves all of its freshly prepared tacos for a measly $2. Try any of their tacos – fish, shrimp, pork, beef, steak, chicken – with a side of their chewy chips and guacamole, and this will be one happy hour that you hit up strictly for the food. OK and the $5 margaritas.
4326 W. Sunset Blvd., 90029; 323-664-1011
The Satellite: It used to be called Spaceland and now it's named after an object that hovers above the Earth so that people like us can watch cable TV. And it's no wonder, with a happy hour that runs nightly from midnight to 2 a.m., naming your bar anything else would just be out of this world! Too much? Beer is half off during happy hour, and so are well drinks. The Satellite doubles as a music venue, so admission is also free after midnight. Hmm, nothing too unworldly about that. OK I'll stop now.
1717 Silver Lake Blvd., 90026; 323-661-4380
El Conquistador: Let's face it, there's a certain type of art to making a margarita that really packs a punch, and it seems like most bars are happy to use the cheap mix you buy at Ralph's. At El Conquistador in Silver Lake, however, their award-winning margaritas are always blended with the utmost care, so you never feel like there's something missing. And as far as packing a punch, let's just say you'll probably only need to order one. Then again, no one's going to fault you for ordering a second. Happy hour is Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and includes specials on drinks (including their margaritas!) and appetizers.
3701 W. Sunset Blvd., 90026; 323-666-5136
1642 Beer and Wine: Only in Silver Lake would a place like 1642 Beer and Wine host a specialty "tamale happy hour." It happens every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and includes a free tamale with the purchase of every beer. Tell me again why every bar isn't doing that? But wait… there's more! 1642 has lots of other great freebies as well, like complimentary peanuts and pretzels, and live jazz every Wednesday night.
1642 W. Temple St., 90026; 213-989-6836
Silver Lake Lounge: Silver Lake has lots of cool spots that feature live music all day, every day. So how do you choose which one is best for you? Well, if you're a fan of indie rock (and who in Silver Lake isn't?), then the Silver Lake Lounge is probably your best bet. Not only do they feature the best and brightest indie rock has to offer, with live concerts every Monday thru Thursday, and early in the evening on Saturdays, but they also have a really great happy hour. It happens every Monday thru Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the weekends. Cheap beer and live music. So much for tough decisions.
2906 W. Sunset Blvd., 323-663-9636
Red Lion Tavern: It makes sense that the German-themed Red Lion Tavern would offer a gigantic mug of beer known only as "Das Boot." For the casual drinker, however, drinking a 64 oz. brewski in one sitting may seem a little excessive. So why not drink a regular sized beer during happy hour? It happens weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and features all of Red Lion's delicious German beers, including Oktoberfest and Hofbrau Lager, for a mere $5. And the best part is they're all 16 ounces! Smaller never sounded so good.
2366 Glendale Blvd., 323-662-5337
Barbrix: When Los Angeles Magazine votes you “best wine bar” in the city, let's just say you already have a fairly healthy edge on the competition. So why even bother to talk about the happy hour at Barbrix in Silver Lake? I mean, it's already been validated by the prestigious L.A. Mag. Why rub it in, right?! But when drink specials include half off on all wines by the glass, $8 specialty Prosecco cocktails, and really tasty slider hamburgers for $6, that just gives your bar even more reason to gloat. Happy hour is Sunday to Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and once again from 10 p.m. to close.
2442 Hyperion Ave., 90027; 323-662-2442
City Sip: If you're a wino – meant in the most positive of ways, of course – then you'll love happy hour at City Sip. It happens every Tuesday thru Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and includes a “constantly evolving selection” of wines for $4, not to mention Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon for $6. Select cheese plates, like aged cheddar and manchego, are also available during happy hour for $5. Now you can really say yes when someone asks you if you want a little cheese with your wine. Okay, end of bad joke.
2150 Sunset Blvd., 90026; 213-483-9463
The Edendale: It's a 20s era fire department that's been converted into a neighborhood bar/restaurant. So that alone is pretty cool. But even better is the fact that The Edendale has a late night happy hour from 11 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It's there that you can order fried calamari, creamy baked mac & cheese, and their famous fried chicken buns, all for $10 and under. The Edendale also has happy hour every Monday thru Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For a full list of all the items available on their happy hour menu, visit The Edendale's website.
2838 Rowena Ave., 90039; 323-666-2000
Mexican Village Restaurant & Cantina: Family owned and operated since 1965, Mexican Village Restaurant & Cantina has long been a bright spot amongst Silver Lake's residents. Happy hour is daily from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and includes their famous house margaritas for $3, and their tasty tacos for a $1. When it's all said and done, you can spend about $10 and still leave feeling satisfied.
3668 Beverly Blvd., 90004; 213-385-0479
Naya Sunset Restaurant & Lounge: Since opening in November of 2011, Naya Sunset Restaurant & Lounge has quickly established itself as one of Silver Lake's go to spots for tasty Indian food. However, the little known secret is that they also have an awesome happy hour. It happens daily from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and includes a wide range of exotic sounding cocktails – Spa in Goa, Taj Boilermaker, and The Dancing Lotus, to name a few – for just $5. They also serve an array of delicious appetizers, like pizza, burgers, and goat cheese salad, for $5 and under. And right now, if you check in with Foursquare during happy hour you get an extra 10% off your bill. Isn't technology great?
3705 W. Sunset Blvd., 90026; 323-663-8268
Hyperion Public: It's only been a few weeks since it's soft opening, but Hyperion Public is already establishing itself as a classy joint for live music, cheap drinks, and great late night food in Silver Lake. Happy hour is weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and includes food and drink specials. And as long as you're there, you might as well give their truffle mac and cheese a try, even if you're not hungry. You'll thank me for it.
2538 Hyperion Ave., 90027; 323-761-6440
Diablo: Diablo calls itself an “urban taco fabricator.” Your guess is as good as mine as far as the meaning, but at least the tacos are good… and exotic! Let’s face it, there aren’t too many places on the planet that are substituting traditional taco meat with ground bison chili and maple fried chicken. Diablo’s happy hour happens from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., then once again from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., every Tuesday thru Friday. It’s there that you can get 16 oz. PBR tall boys for a $1, cans of Olympia for $2, and 32 oz. bottles of Corona for $10. They’re even serving up their delicious bison chili tacos for $2 each during happy hour. Why try a bison meat taco, especially when traditional beef tacos do such a good job of it? Well, as the ancient saying goes, “When in Silver Lake, do as the Silver Lakers do.” And there you have it.
