The Black Keys made a special appearance on Friday at KROQ's Red Bull Sound Space for several lucky fans (and LA.com).The live show was streamed online beginning at 7:00 am on the SoCal rock station KROQ 106.7 FM.
Kevin and Bean host of KROQS morning radio show, welcomed the Black Keys, "This is a real treat to be in this limited audience with one of the biggest rock bands in the world, the Black Keys are here." said Bean as the Audience was well within 25 feet from the guests of honor.
There is no pretension here folks, these boys exude rock from their pores, Rock n Roll at it finest. They put on an amazing mini-performance at the KROQ Red Bull Sound Space, including
Kevin and Bean opened up the Q& A with the first question, "I was thinking about you guys today, earlier as we were preparing for this and I was thinking, the kind of Band that plays the music that you play, can't expect success, right? Nobody goes and plays the kind of music you play and says,'this is going to set the world on fire' everyday day must be a surprise for you as to how popular you are?"
"Yeah it is,every year something crazy, crazier happens, every week really."
Perhaps Auerbach was referring to their (Blacks Keys) sky-rocketing success after the release of "Brothers" their huge sixth studio album. But this was not without hard work, many hours of playing many shows, traveling and touring, and not getting any radio play.
That came later when having turned down offers to commercialize their songs out of fear of being considered sell-outs at the beginning of their career, changed their minds when they were unable to get any mainstream radio exposure.
When asked about their first gig when they made $10 and wouldn't they rather get nothing, Dan responded "Better than the second gig we got nothing, there was nobody
As for what kept them going and what the motivation was?, Patrick Answered "Rent","We both kind of dropped out of school and we didn't have any other options than to play music." "The small amount of money we were making was better than making the same amount of money like working at McDonald's."
How did the gig go with Neil Young? "Great, he said he could hear us from his hotel room."
Auerbach and Carney also answered questions about working with producer and musician Danger Mouse, the first person the duo has ever let in on their recording process.(2008 album Attack & Release)
"He's just like having a third person (that) we trust in a room to bounce ideas off of," added Auerbach.
The Black Keys announced a few days earlier that there will definitely be a new album in coming in 2013 followed by tour dates, including Lollapolaza South America and Brazil and Mexico.
