BILLY BRAGG AT THE EL REY
To most Americans, Billy Bragg is the English folkie that collaborated with Wilco on a trio of albums – known collectively as the Mermaid Avenue albums – that featured the previously unheard lyrics of Woody Guthrie. So whatever happened to Mr. Bragg? As it turns out, he never went anywhere. In fact, Billy Bragg's been around for over three decades, making him about as much of an icon in his native England as Bob Dylan is here. Maybe not quite as big as His Bobness, but you get the point – the dude knows how to write a tune. Last month Bragg released Tooth & Nail, his first album of new material in five years, and will be stopping into the El Rey in March to support it. And yes, you can expect to hear at least one Woody Guthrie cover.
