The cast for the rock musical “Hair,” the annual star-studded Hollywood Bowl production taking place Aug. 1-3, has been announced. It includes Kristen Bell, Hunter Parrish, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz and Beverly D'Angelo. Adam Shankman will direct and choreograph with conductor Lon Hoyt and associate director and associate choreographer Zach Woodlee.
The story of “Hair” centers around a group of hippies in New York City and their evolving opinions and experiences on life and love during the age of the sexual revolution. Driving the tale home is one character's struggle to decide whether to serve in the military in Vietnam or avoid the draft by fleeing.
Bell, who stars in Showtime's “House of Lies” and was the voice of Anna in Disney's “Frozen,” plays Sheila, an intelligent student and very passionate protestor in the middle of a love triangle. Parrish plays Claude, one of Sheila's lovers and the charismatic leader of the group. He was Silas Botwin on Showtime's “Weeds” and stars in the upcoming film “Still Alice,” with Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart and Alec Baldwin.
Riley is best known as Mercedes Jones on “Glee” and won the 17th season of ABC's “Dancing With the Stars.” She takes on the role of the sassy and fun Dionne, while fellow “Glee” cast member Ushkowitz is the sweet “tribe mother” Jeanie.
The show is a homecoming of sorts for D'Angelo, who played Sheila in the 1979 Milos Forman film version of “Hair” — this time around she is Mom. D'Angelo has a long resume, which includes playing Patsy Cline in the film, “Coal Miner's Daughter.”
Tickets for the show are now on sale at HollywoodBowl.com or at the box office. Please note that “Hair” contains many adult themes, including simulated drug use, brief nudity, profanity and blatant sexual positioning.
