We dread the month of May. There is a stretch of three family holidays in one week -- sister and dad birthday and Mother's Day. We all probably have a month like this in our lives.
Don't take us the wrong way -- we've much love for the family. Wejust don't love malls. Or parking at malls, dealing with pushy salespeople at malls, choking on clouds of perfume as we walk through department stores at malls .
May grants us a grand shopping solution, however.
Unique Los Angeles is perfect for this dilemma. It's a two-day shopping event held at a hip penthouse in Downtown's Fashion District. (No malls involved) And not only will there be 275 vendors selling everything from sockmonkeys to stationery, and t-shirts to toe rings, but you can also expect a pop-up eatery from Silverlake's Malo restaurant and a DJ spinning in the lounge area. Because really, what's Mother's Day shopping without beef and pickle tacos, and some chill tunes?
But the coolest part of the whole thing is that it supports independent design, brings together the creative community and promotes individualism. Which in our book, awesomely makes it the "Anti-Mall".
Another thing that's very un-mall-ish? FREE stuff. They'll be giving out free biodegradable shopping bags, gift wrapping, beer, wine, and pictures at the Oh Snap! Studios' Photo Booth. There will also be a DIY Lab where you can get artsy and make your own gift tags and cards ... also for free.
Tickets are $5 and half of all ticket sales goes to a local charity. Oh yeah, and children 10 and under are...yep, you guessed it -- free!
Let's face it, this weekend, the hardest part will be remembering to get something for the fam.
A few vendors that caught our eye:
Henry Road -- We love the big, bold patterns on their pillows and furniture
amykathryn -- Eco and animal friendly handbags
