The cruel, harsh realities of Hollywood stardom can often be frustrating to the millions of aspiring actors and actresses that flock to its streets each year. There's only so many times a person can hear the word "no" in a given week. But at happy hour, that very word simply doesn't exist. In fact, you'll most likely hear different variations of the word yes, as in "Yes, please!", "Yeah, I'll take another one!" and "Sure, why not." Ah, the bar world can be so comforting when you need it to be. So if you've had a rough day and just need to unwind, look no further than these five bars for great happy hour specials in Hollywood. Drink up!
The Parlour Room: Let's face it, lots of bars in Hollywood can be pretty sleazy. But The Parlour Room puts the class back into drinking. The place doesn't open up until 8 p.m on most nights, which means happy hour runs until about 10 p.m. The signature drink is the mint julep, which will run you $5 during happy hour. Beers are $3, and martinis are $5 all day. Parking can be a bit pricey (especially on weekends), so you're best hoofing it or taking a cab.
6423 Yucca St., 90028; 323-463-0609
The Three Clubs: Most of the bar scenes in Swingers were shot here, so Three Clubs definitely has credibility among the Hollywood crowd. (You're so money and you don't even know it!) But you'll still find a lot more unpretentious folks in this place than you will in any of the clubs on Cahuenga – which is always a good thing. Happy hour is nightly from 6 p.m to close, and features really stiff well drinks for about $5. Just bring a flashlight if you plan on staying for awhile. It gets pretty dark inside once the sun goes down.
1123 Vine St., 90038; 323-462-6441
iO West: Not only is it one ofiO West in Hollywood also has a happy hour every Monday through Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. that includes daily drink specials. For instance, on Thursdays most bourbon and all Belgian beers are $5! As an added bonus, stars from The Office, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Anchorman have been know to drink there after performing on stage.
6366 Hollywood Blvd., 90028; 323-962-7560
Lucky Strike Lanes: OK I know what you're thinking, a bowling alley in Hollywood? What has the world come to, right? But hey, let's not forget that The Big Lebowski (AKA Jeff Bridges) was an avid bowler, and he was the quintessential L.A. slacker! So it kind of makes sense that Lucky Strike Lanes, the only bowling alley in Hollywood, would host a really great happy hour every Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., where you can get $3 domestic draft beers, $5 well drinks, $4 shots and a martini special for $6. The Dude definitely abides.
6801 Hollywood Blvd., Suite 143, 90028; 323-467-7776
Five0Four: If there's one complaint about happy hours (and this is a stretch!) it's that they all happen at the same time. So the New Orleans-themed Five0Four decided to change things up a bit with their "reverse happy hour". So from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., every Sunday to Thursday, you can get a pint of beer for $3, and two-for-one drinks on all top shelf liquor. Tell me again why every bar hasn't copied this genius idea yet?
6541 Hollywood Blvd., Ste. 102, 90028; 323-960-0224
Big Wangs: Most happy hours start in the late afternoon and end in the early evening so that 9 to 5ers can have a drink with friends after work. But this is Hollywood, a place where few people (if any) have normal working hours. So Big Wangs got it right by having a Late Night Happy Hour every night
1562 N. Cahuenga Blvd., 90028; 323-469-2449
The Cat and Fiddle: The site is one of the few vestiges of Old Hollywood that still remain, and its even rumored that parts of Casablanca were filmed here. Perhaps it's the inspiration for Bogart's famous line, "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." Probably not, though. Today, however, the Cat and Fiddle is a popular British-themed pub and one of the few bars in Hollywood with an outdoor patio. Happy hour is everyday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and includes all draft beer, house wine, and well drinks for a measly $3.50. And if that's not enough, they're also serving potato skins, French bread pizza, fish cakes with tartar sauce, and other appetizers for $5. Who knew happy hour could taste so good?
6530 Sunset Blvd., 90028; 323-468-3800
Piano Bar: Unlike other Hollywood spots that offer live music, Piano Bar never charges a cover. So that's reason alone to stop in and check it out. But when you factor in their happy hour, which happens daily from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., that's even more reason to go. Drink specials includes beer, wine and well drinks for $4, as well as a bottle a day special for $3. Celebrities like Jeremy Renner have also been known to pop in from time to time.
6429 Selma Ave., 323-466-2750
Outpost: Outpost is the new kid on the block in the constantly evolving Hollywood bar scene, so it's no wonder their happy hour is an attention grabber. It happens every Monday thru Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays thru Thursdays from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., and incudes two for one deals on all liquor. But wait… there's more! On Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., skinny margaritas are $5, and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. they have an all you can eat buffet for $9.95. Now that my friends, is how all happy hours should be done!
1624 N. Cahuenga Blvd., 90028; 323-464-7678
Birds: It's definitely the best spot in Hollywood for rotisserie chicken. And the dipping sauces that come with it – like their artichoke garlic flavor – are just one more reason you should come to Birds on Franklin Avenue for lunch or dinner. And if you're not hungry, you're also in luck. Because Birds has one of the most extensive happy hours around. How extensive is it? How about Monday thru Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., where beer, house wine and well drinks are all $3; a late night happy hour from 11 p.m. to Midnight every Tuesday thru Thursday, where pretty much every drink on the menu is half price; and a special lady's night on Friday from 11 p.m. to close where women get to drink for half price. Need I say more?
5925 Franklin Ave., 90028; 323-465-0175
Tavern on Hollywood: What separates the brand new Tavern On Hollywood from Big Wangs, Outpost, Dillon's, and all the other sports bars in the area? How about a seven-hour happy hour (you heard right!), happening daily (again, not a typo!)? It's there that you can get nearly all of their 42 beers – like Stella, Sierra Nevada, and Guinness – for $2.50. And the best part is, they're all on tap! Well drinks are also $6 during happy hour. You can find their full beer list on the website at www.tavernonhollywood.com.
6327 Hollywood Blvd., 90028; 323-464-9400
Stout: Stout already holds the title for serving up the best gourmet burgers in Hollywood. And every weekday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. they're half off – all of them. That includes the Goombah, which comes with smoked mozzarella and crispy prosciutto, the original Stout Burger, even the egg-topped Morning After. And the best part is they're all $5! Wait a minute, that's cheaper than Carl's Jr.
1544 N. Cahuenga Blvd., 90028; 323-469-3801
Next Door Lounge: The Next Door Lounge does a decent job of replicating a Prohibition-era speakeasy, meaning you'll need to know the “secret password” in order to get past the man wearing the tuxedo and top-hot. You can find the pass right here, just in case you were wondering. Once you make it past the gigantic metal doors and walk inside, you'll be happy to know that happy hour is Tuesday thru Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. It includes craft beer for $4, wine for $6, and cocktails for $8, and appetizers like spinach and goat cheese pizza and mini chicken tostadas going for around $6. Al Capone would be proud.
1154 N. Highland Ave., 90038; 323-465-5500
Pig N' Whistle: It's been a mainstay on Hollywood Boulevard since the 20s, and now Pig N' Whistle has a happy hour that rivals any other bar in the area. It happens from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday thru Friday, and includes draft beers for $3, house wines for $4, with well drinks and appetizers costing $5. They also serve shepherd's pie, roasted chicken, fish ‘n chips, as well as bangers ‘n mash. You didn't just think they came up with the name Pig N' Whistle on a whim, did you?
6714 Hollywood Blvd., 90028; 323-463-0000
The Virgil: Does all night happy hour sound good? Then you’ll want to make your way over to The Virgil in East Hollywood on Tuesday nights. It’s there that you can get specialty cocktails, beer, and wine for $5. All night happy hour starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until the bartenders close up shop. If Tuesday’s a bad night for you, then fear not. Regular happy hour is every Wednesday thru Sunday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. And yes, all drinks, wine and beer are also $5. The Virgil opens everyday at 7 p.m. and never charges a cover.
