A fixture at the Santa Monica Pier entrance since 1923, the original Lobster was a dinky open-air seafood market. Now, with much renovation, the modern restaurant is a must-visit for most visitors.

With a sweeping terrace and stellar views of both the Pacific and the Pier, the Lobster could serve so-so food and it would still be packed to the gills. Luckily, Allyson Thurber (from the venerable Water Grill) reinvigorated a not-so-challenging menu with simple yet sophisticated fare that appeals to the palates of locals and visitors alike. With the ocean so close, seafood has to be the star, and the kitchen doesn't disappoint: Standouts include pepper-crusted tuna and Maine sea scallops. Lobster comes steamed or grilled, in chowder or on salads. Thinking of dropping in just for a drink at sunset? Plan ahead: The happening bar scene gathers steam long before then, and keeps going until 1am on weekends. —Lesley Balla
