Don't swear off chain restaurants just yet. Kabuki's nine SoCal locations are reliable without feeling corporate or predictable. Though the menu is universal, each location has its own specific ambience.

A good barometer for any restaurant is the simplest dish, where the essential flavor can't be tricked out. Kabuki passes this test in every offering from its non-greasy fried tofu to the generous seared albacore salad with a simple sesame dressing. The sushi is comparable to items at many more expensive eateries, and there are plenty of options for people who aren't into raw fish; teriyakis, hibachi dishes, cooked fish and vegetarian dishes mean no one will feel left out. Huge boat dinners, served in wooden vessels, are a fun option for group food feasts.
