This roomy enclave is meant to look like the home of a rich Berber, though the costumed waiters and wandering belly dancers help it come off more as a theme restaurant. Still, the food and decor are more worthy than schmaltzy.

A great choice for a birthday or office party, Dar Maghreb offers a theme experience that's palatable for those who aren't so keen on them. The glamorous, white-walled exterior has no windows, so once you're inside, there's no reminder of the Sunset Strip action yards away. Several rooms are connected by arched doorways, walled in blue and gold mosaics, and set up with cushioned couches and throw pillows. All the food is served family-style at large, round tables and meant to be eaten with the hands—dishtowels are provided instead of napkins—which leads to a fun, festive meal. Ordering is easy; there are three prix-fixe menus, each at $37. All start with a delicious (and surprisingly light) lentil soup and an appealing platter of vegetable marinades served with bread. After that, choices of lamb, quail and chicken are laid out. Recommended is the B'Stilla, a sort of chicken coffeecake made with raisins, almonds, eggs, flour and, yes, chicken. Strange as it sounds—and sweet as this tastes—it's a fantastic appetizer. Throughout the meal, roving belly dancers in elaborate costumes wiggle their stuff to Middle Eastern music and ring their finger cymbals. Guests often join them for PG-rated shake-alongs.
