Known for its celeb wedding cakes, this tiny nook of a bakery is also a top-notch stop for a quick sweet treat. Its new Silver Lake megakitchen means its number of fans are about to increase exponentially.

The few tables in the room are hard to snag at the busiest times of day—breakfast and lunch—but service is brisk so the wait isn't that bad. Those fortunate enough to get a seat are rewarded with nearly insurmountable temptation from the overstuffed pastry cases. (Of course, any of the sandwiches, salads or baked treats can be ordered to go.) Owner Jane Lockhart's secret to success isn't a secret at all: Use only the freshest, high-quality ingredients and they will come. And they've come in such droves that SLJ has opened a kitchen in Silver Lake that's 10 times the size of the one on Melrose. The purpose of the 7,000-square-foot commercial facility is to crank out the goods for other local gourmet shops and restaurants throughout Southern California; every cake, though, will still be hand-decorated.
