We loved the tres leches at Posh on Pico, one of the spots now subsumed by this eco-minded incarnation we were primed to resent. But our hearts stomachs grew three sizes the day of our visit.

If the Jetsons were more environmentally minded (all that smoke that came out of Rosie the robot can't have helped the air quality), their dining room might've looked something like Bloom Cafe. The small, square space is stark and mid-century modern, brightened by chairs and benches in neon orange and green. (There's also a fair amount of sidewalk seating out front.) The aim of the Frenchmen owners is to create a sustainable, eco-friendly spot with an emphasis on fresh, organic ingredients. Which is all well and good, but not if your carbs taste like U-Haul boxes. Thankfully, everything we tried was fresh and succulent, and served to a fun, easygoing crowd of gays (always first to find the new spots!), worldly loners and hip families. Options for breakfast, served all day, include housemade granola and tasty egg dishes; the burger comes highly recommended as well. —Lonny Pugh
