Considering LA's health-conscious eating habits, why is it that our favorite foods involve heaps of greasy chili?

Can a burger melt in your mouth? Tommy's comes close, and there's no denying the likelihood of it melting onto your shirt and pants as well. At this original LA stand, the chili burger is king. And not much has changed in more than 50 years of business. The napkins are still brown paper towels from the lean-to walls, canned soft drinks are still stored in giant coolers, and grub still arrives in 30 seconds flat. And still, the shack inspires Tommy's runs from drunk USC students, late-night club kids and the occasional Downtown suit playing hooky at lunch. The only thing that has changed is the neighborhood, which feels pretty seedy at times.
