This historic original Downtown location was installed in a real dining car salvaged from the city's oil-boom days. The place got a much needed face-lift in 2004, but it's still very Raymond Chandler.

Beef-loving business types have flocked to the Pacific Dining Car since 1921. The beef, dry-aged on the premises, earned the Car a place on Wine Spectator magazine's list of the top five steakhouses in America. But the 24-hour menu allows for both old-fashioned and fancy any time of day or night: Breakfast options include bacon and eggs or eggs sardou (creamed spinach and artichoke bottoms topped with two poached eggs and hollandaise sauce), and dinner choices include a burger or a Mongolian pork chop. —Lesley Balla
