AxeFarm-fresh and eclectic, this energetic spot is trumped-up Californian ![]() It's hard to believe any restaurant could stand out on Venice Beach's famous restaurant row, but Axe has developed a cult following. Enthusiasts from afar flock to it for its fresh, clean flavors and innovative specials.Pronounced "AH-shay," the restaurant's name comes from an African salutation meaning "Go with the power of gods and goddesses." Yup, we're in Venice now. Chef/owner Joanna Moore strives for a vibe that's a sort of organic-sparse-enviro-industrial smoothie. The modern decor, an ode to sharp-edged open spaces, somehow works wonderfully thanks to the clientele and cuisine rounding out the experience. Area farmer's markets contribute to fresh dishes like nine-grain pancakes or a chicken-apple salad at brunch, rice bowl or lentil-sausage soup at lunch, and soy braised beef shortribs or a porterhouse pork chop with apple-cider reduction at dinner. Salads and antipasti can be conjured from that day's freshest selections; beer, sake and a crisply edited wine list complete Axe's distinct experience.
