Hot Dog on a StickCholesterol-choking California concoctions ![]() The cornmeal-encrusted turkey dogs are OK, but the uniforms worn by the employees are doubtlessly worth the trip. The name says it all, except for the cornmeal part. In 1946, the first Hot Dog on a Stick opened in Muscle Beach near the Santa Monica Pier. Serving two food groups on one stick was just one of several good ideas including fresh-squeezed lemonade and, of course, the employee uniforms. And by uniforms we mean crazy Jockey caps and hot pants in "Romper Room" striped colors. (The outfits were introduced in the '60s and thankfully never updated.) The franchise, which is now owned by the employees, has since spread to malls.
