Hoping to break the curse apparently placed on this constantly changing Santa Monica space, the Cal-Japanese-sushi spot Akwa picked up where Union left off. The aquatic (if oddly spelled) name refers in part to the myriad waterfalls throughout.

Although the first floor's small but sleek sushi bar is a draw for those looking for a low-key night, the upstairs lounge and patio restaurant are the real stars. There, black-linened tables are tucked between two buildings—one with a weathered, New Yorkish brick wall, and the other very modern LA—so the leafy getaway feels ultra-secluded. Toward the back is an outdoor lounge with chairs, comfy couches and a bird's-eye view of the diners below. Though it may sound like one big identity crisis, everyone seems to find what they're looking for. The main menu includes dishes like mixed shellfish with lobster ravioli, baked organic Scottish salmon and filet mignon. Then the pastry chef comes through with an ever-changing mix of interesting desserts like chocolate souffle and homemade green tea ice cream. Perhaps a splash of Akwa was the curse's cure.
