Tengu--Santa MonicaIt takes two ![]() From the owners of Nine Thirty, Holly's, Holly's West and, of course, the Westwood Tengu, this oceanside outpost of the popular sushi spot does not disappoint fans of the brand. When The Ivy at the Shore moved up the block a bit, the Choice Hospitality group seized the opportunity to extend their empire all the way to the ocean (well, almost). Inside: a black-and-white motif anchored by coffered ceilings, marble and bleached wood floors. It's beachy but formal enough that it doesn't feel like it could blow away in a swift ocean breeze. (The lounge is in the back: Look for the DJ booth behind the hostess stand.) The food, as expected, satisfies; chef Shunji Nakao has been in the kitchens of Matsuhisa, Asanebu and The Hump. Our lemongrass-enhanced halibut erred toward bland and dry, but the sushi, salads and steaks (our pleasant, knowledgeable waitress correctly steered us toward the filet) made for a pleasant meal that, had we not already purchased movie tickets, could easily have extended until closing. After the movie, we quite literally dreamed about the flavorful, perfect mochi. —Lonny Pugh
