British on a budget

On July 21, 2007

Fun in L.A. for a few quid

Tally-ho, regular Joes. Here are some popular local spots to grab some proper British fare without having to spend it like Beckham.

VAN NUYS

Robin Hood British Pub
13640 Burbank Blvd.
(818) 994-6045 www.robinhoodpub.net
Two British ex-pats opened this pub in 1982, and it's become a reliable stop for authentic fish and chips ($11.95), shepherd's pie ($10.50) and sherry trifle ($4.50). An added bonus: it's next door to the Friar Tuck Shop where you can pick up all your favorite British goods.

SANTA MONICA

Britannia Pub
318 Santa Monica Blvd.
(310) 458-5350, www.britanniapub.com
Feel like belting it out like a Brit? Feel free to grab the mic on any one of the karaoke nights (10 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) at this popular beachside pub fusing English and California style. Or just leave the singing to the pros, sit on your bum and enjoy the weekly featured Beatles cover band (10 p.m. Sundays).

TARZANA

Oh, Fancy That!
18399 Ventura Blvd., No. 11
(818) 996-4405, www.ohfancythat.net
Have a hankering for some Hob Nobs? Got a taste for Typhoo (tea)? Or maybe you're craving a Crunchie. This Brit-owned shop offers lots of goodies that, they claim, "British people can't live without." Shop online or check out their Valley location for deals on authentically U.K. products.

LOS ANGELES

Opening Ceremony
451 N. La Cienega Blvd.
(310) 652-1120, www.openingceremony.com
All this time you were coveting Kate Moss' skinny jeans, now you're just a quick (in L.A. traffic terms) drive away from dressing like her. Moss collaborated with British boutique Topshop to offer a line of affordable items available at this West L.A. store. With prices ranging from $20 for a tank to $200 for a dress, you won't break the bank to feel like a million bucks (or a model worth millions).
