Comfort food for day and night at 'Kitchen 24'

With minimalist decor, all dishes are made in-house from organic ingredients

BY ERIC ROSEN >LA.COM
Parked on a busy strip of the Cahuenga Corridor, Kitchen 24 is the perfect spot for an early breakfast, midday meal, or late dinner (or another super-early breakfast depending on how late your night goes).

Serving up classic all-American diner food, Kitchen 24 aims to be a combo of value, style and consistency. This isn’t any old greasy spoon though. The décor is minimalist-chic, all their dishes are made in-house from organic ingredients, and even the water is specially filtered.

Only in Los Angeles.

Breakfast options include a variety of omelets like the Jolly Green Giant: eggs, broccoli, bacon, sausage, tomatoes and cheddar. Can you say “Hungry Man”? Plus, they all come with hash browns breakfast potatoes or corn tots, and toast or an English muffin.

The gingerbread pancakes are a warm bite of heaven, and for our Hasidic friends, there’s the Challah-Lujah! French toast. Lunch and dinner offers the usual salads like Caesar and Nicoise, and a daily roster of soups like carrot ginger and turkey chili, as well as a few different burgers and sandwiches.

There are some hearty dinner entrees like a roasted half chicken, meatloaf, fish ‘n’ chips, and turkey pot pie. Desserts like the skillet apple pie à la mode and the ice cream sandwich are delicious tastes of middle America, or opt instead for a thick, creamy milkshake. Let’s not forget that this is a spot hoping to attract the runoff from all the nearby nightclubs, and as such, it has an extensive alcohol menu as well.

The building Kitchen 24 took over has its own appeal too. It was formerly the legendary California Jazz Club, and to commemorate its musical history, you can often find a DJ spinning house music. There have been some complaints about a staff that is too cool for school, but our own experience was nothing but down-home friendliness.
