With its small-town awning and fresh fuchsia lettering, it’s an inviting space for baked goods kitsch

With its small-town awning and fresh fuchsia lettering, it’s an inviting space for baked goods kitsch—a bit like a Cold Stone Creamery with all the raided-the-candy-aisle-at-CVS toppings (in addition to a worthy Cotton Candy, Hostess lookalike, and masterfully peanutbutterry Fluffernutter). Don’t be surprised if the line is cut by a self-proclaimed “PMS-ing Brookylnite” angling for a peppermint hot cocoa to go with her dozen of mini-cupcakes, plus a Brobdignanian M&M brownie “for her husband.” (Sure.)

Here’s the peculiar part: Crumbs cupcakes come in a single package, and we spotted tweens and their soccer moms sitting at the outdoor tables of the gelateria next door…eating the Supersized gargantuans with a fork and knife. This action begs the question: Are these really cupcakes? And given the cupcake’s original utilitarian promise of utensils-free existence, what, really, is this Snickers Bar-studded frosting bomb of ganache and buttercream, anyway?
