Weekly Restaurant Specials: Sunday

From Boa to Wilshire (alphabetically) ... Sundays have a wine attitude

Have expensive tastes, but not the cash to indulge them? Well, starve no more. We have been scouring the city’s best restaurants for deals that will allow wallets of any thickness enjoy the gourmet meals they so heartily deserve.

(Need more options? Please peep the guides for the rest of the week: Monday; Tuesday; Wednesday; Thursday; Saturday; and Sunday.)

SUNDAY

Boa: Wine Lover’s Night 101 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90401, 310-899-4466

Another option for the winos out there—every bottle on Boa’s extensive wine list is half price. So while the food is not a bargain—the entrees feature mostly steak and seafood and can  cost as much as $39—at least you can drink at a discount.

Dominick’s: Prix Fixe Sunday Supper 8715 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048, 310-652-2335 (patio at right)

Dominick’s younger sibling restaurant, Little Dom’s, may be getting all the rave reviews lately, but this former Rat Pack watering hole serves up one of the best deals in town with its family-style three-course Sunday Suppers for $15. The menu changes every week, so be sure to check the web site to see what’s on order. A recent menu started with a simple green salad, then went on to a main course of cioppino (a summery fish stew), with a dessert of chocolate biscotti gelato. But the sweetest part of the deal is the $10 bottle of extremely drinkable house wine, or the $2 beers that are offered with this meal.

Lucques: Sunday Supper 8474 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90048, 323-655-6277

Probably the best-known, and best-attended, weekly deal in town is the Sunday Supper at Lucques. It has become such an institution that there is even a cookbook of recipes generated from it. Though the price has just increased to $45 per person, this three-course meal is still a steal at one of the best restaurants in town. Like many of the other special menus listed here, the dishes change every week depending on what is in season and looks good at the local farmer’s markets. A recent menu listed a starter of first-of-the-season peaches with dandelion, ricotta salata, crushed almonds and aged balsamic; a choice of grilled market fish in saffron broth with yellow potatoes and stewed fennel and aioli or a veal saltimbocca with arugula salad, cherry tomatoes and capers in brown butter; and a dessert of a blood orange copetta with vanilla ice cream and lady’s kisses. Be sure to go with a friend so you can try both entrees.

O-Bar: Half-Price Wine Night 8279 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90046, 323-822-3300 (at left)

Every bottle of wine, that’s right, every single one, is half off on Sundays at this design-oriented West Hollywood lounge restaurant. Granted, the prices are inflated to begin with, but you can get some fantastic wines like the Grgich Hills Cabernet, a Robert Sinskey Pinot Noir, or the Steele Cuvee Chardonnay for a pretty good price. So uncork a bottle and watch the pretty members of the velvet mafia drift from table to table on their social rounds.

Wilshire Restaurant: Neighborhood Barbecue Night 2454 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90403, 310-586-1707 (chef Andrew Kirschner at right)

One of our favorite restaurants has launched one of our favorite weekly special dining events for summer. Take advantage of Wilshire Restaurant’s gorgeous outdoor patio and grab a seat near one of the fire pits as the aroma of cooking meats wafts towards your table. But don’t expect just any old burger-and-hotdog do. Items on the menu include tender pulled Kurobata pork ($20), spicy grilled andouille sausage ($17), Kobe beef tri tip ($18), and, of course, baby back ribs ($19). You can also order a side of baked beans or corn on the cob with garlic butter. We know, the prices ain’t cheap, but it sure beats swilling warm beer in the blazing sun as you wait for your roommate to burn the burgers on his charcoal grill.
