For a real family-style experience, Angeli Caffe on Melrose is the place to come. Dinner starts promptly at 7pm, and is served at long tables where you end up sitting next to anyone else who got a reservation. The menu changes every week and chef Evan Kleiman uses these meals as an opportunity to experiment with cuisine beyond the traditional Italian dishes on Angeli’s everyday menu. For instance, one recent menu included a fresh goat cheese, roasted beet walnut tart served with butter lettuce salad in a shallot vinaigrette. That was followed by crab meat risotto with peas and mint, a grilled flank steak in a black pepper marinade and served with artichoke and Swiss chard gratin and grilled zucchini. For dessert, there were fresh berries and cream. We wish our family dinners had been so good.
