WEDNESDAY

Grace: Doughnut Night 7360 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048, 323-934-4400 (right)

Homemade doughnuts are showing up as specialties on more and more gourmet menus around town, but the place that started the whole trend is Grace on Beverly. There, pastry chef Mariah Swan has been whipping up fanciful fried confections for years. The finger-licking options from a recent night included doughnuts filled with caramelized bananas or malted milk chocolate, and a buttermilk brown butter glazed doughnut. For those in the know, Sunday night at Grace is also Burger Night, and Swan blends up milkshakes in flavors like the caramel tequila and the strawberry cream cheese. With desserts this good, who needs dinner?

Josie: Farmer’s Market Menu 2424 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90405, 310-581-9888

Chef and owner Josie Le Balch may have learned her craft in her father’s French restaurant in the Valley, but she has made a mark all her own at this Westside foodie destination. Now you can see why for yourself if you hit the restaurant on a Wednesday night for her special $35 prix fixe 3-course menu that changes every week depending on what she finds at the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market. Recent specials have included a grilled elk chop with braised red cabbage and chestnut bread pudding, and a roasted breast of pheasant with hazelnut spätzle and baby Brussels sprouts. For you winos out there, Mondays means no corkage fee at Josie, so BYO…

Red Pearl Kitchen: $36 Peking Duck 6703 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90038, 323-525-1415

Just like paella, Peking duck takes a long time to prepare. A really long time. We’re talking 3 days according to traditional recipes. It involves glazing and drying and roasting and dressing and carving and…we could go on and on. But what it means for you is that every Thursday-Saturday, you can sample this delicious treat at trendy Red Pearl Kitchen. One bird serves up to four people, and comes with all the fixings like pancakes, scallions, and hoisin and cucumber sauces. Though the food in general is nothing to write a communist manifesto about, the cool décor and the trendy vibe make this a deal worth trying. They must also really be trying to get people to come since their other offers include half-price bottles of wine on Sundays, and then something called “50% Mondays,” which involves coming to dinner on a Tuesday-Sunday night, and then receiving half off your bill the following Monday. Hey, it might be worth eating there twice in a week.
