Every few days, a new double feature is born. A Tuesday might have two John Cassavettes classics; a Thursday might have a teen-angst double bill like Donnie Darko and Thumbsucker.

One of the only revival theaters still alive in LA, the New Beverly generally avoids the big blow-'em-up, multimillion-dollar pictures so often favored by the Cinerama Dome. Here instead are classics like On the Waterfront or Last Tango in Paris. But that doesn't mean only black-and-whites from the days when Marlon Brando was beautiful; the cinema also books recent treasures like Reservoir Dogs and Trainspotting. The seats are uncomfortable, the screen beat up, the smell a little off—but this cinema, like its films, is a Hollywood classic despite (or perhaps partly because of) these bits of character. Bonus history tidbit: From 1968 through 1977, the theater was also an X-rated venue showcasing then-current adult films as well as stage shows with live nude dancers.
