This vintage theater, which has been a silent-movie house for more than 60 years, is an architectural remnant of the Art Deco theatres that used to dominate Los Angeles.

Built in 1942 by John and Dorothy Hampton, the Silent Movie Theatre is widely recognized as one of the reasons early silent films are still in existence today. After a murder took place inside the theater in 1997, it was closed and put up for sale. Many assumed that would be the end, but enthusiast Charlie Lustman purchased the space on impulse and re-opened it in November 1999 as the only silent-film cinema in the United States. After a million-dollar renovation, the updated 210-seat theater is pure Hollywood. In addition to a full-service cappuccino bar, the adjacent gallery showcases vintage silent movie photographs. The VIP lounge and Spanish patio make the theater a regular spot for private parties and Hollywood functions. Don't expect too much silence when visiting this landmark: Live organ or piano music accompanies most screenings of masterpieces like Metropolis and Modern Times. Hipsters line up to see acts like Ben Lee and Aqualung when the space moonlights as a concert venue. —Kim Peiffer

From April 24-29, stand-up comedians Janeane Garofalo and Marc Maron and former Black Flag punk rocker Henry Rollins will take over the Silent Movie Theatre for a six-night stand.
