  • It's a familiar feeling for any indie music fan living west of Fairfax:  It's early Sunday evening. You're tired, still a little bit hungover, and dreading the Monday morning commute.  All you want to do is get in your PJs and catch up on last week's episode of Lost.  As you hit the play button, you vaguely remember reading about a great lineup of local acts playing all on the same night (!) and only for $6 (!) and with cheap booze too (!)  But wait.... it's Sunday.  And you live in Venice.  And no matter how long you've been waiting to see you're favorite Eastside band, there's absolutely no way you're making the trek to Spaceland, the Echo, or anywhere east of the 405 for that matter.

For anybody who can relate to the above scenario, just know that somebody out there loves you.  And that somebody (or in this case, pair of somebodies) is Jacob Summers and Mark Salas of Westside indie pop outfit The Rhone Occupation.  The singer and guitarist are the brains behind a new operation starting this Sunday, March 1 at the Air Conditioned Supper Club in Venice --  a new monthly music night called Air Conditioned Indie, which will feature a lineup of 4 bands that normally play around the Eastside circuit.

The event is meant to bolster the seemingly nonexistent Westside indie music scene; most of the weekly residencies take place Eastside clubs like Spaceland, the Echo, and the Silverlake Lounge.  It's rare that any top-tier local acts -- like the Parson Redheads, who are playing the first ever Air Conditioned Indie -- can be found in the West LA area.

"The ultimate goal was threefold:  to support a scene on the Westside, have great lineups, and support bands that we're really into," Summers said.  "We were going to hold it in the back alley of a barbershop, but we ran into problems getting the space.  About 6 months ago, we found Air Conditioned and were really impressed with the layout, look and location of the place."

Air Conditioned Indie will also attempt to pick up some of the slack left by two of the scene's more notable local band showcases -- Radio Free Silverlake's Let's

Independent! , which ended in November 2008 after a 2-year run, and the now-defunct Indie 103.1's Check One...Twosdays.

"We were big supporters of Let's Independent -- the lineup was always spot on, and the show was one that you wanted to see through from start to finish; it wasn't something you wanted to go to just to see one band," explained Summers.  "We want to make this monthly a standard for what a great night of local music can be - both for the bands and the fans."

For just 6 bucks, you can catch One Trick Pony and The World Record, along with the 60s-esque pop rock of The Parson Redheads and indie/alt-country headliners Flashing Red Lights.  So this Sunday night, put your shoes and socks back on for a few hours and support local music.  We promise that the Island will still be there when you get back.
