Johnny Depp joined longtime friends Bill Carter, Bruce Witkin
and Joey Malone in a Texas-style blues jam Friday night at
The Mint LA nightclub in Los Angeles.

Renowned Austin songwriter Carter and actor Depp go way back to the days when they were both members of the band P (yes, the band whose name is that single letter).

Bass player Bruce Witkin and guitarist Joey Malone played with Depp in the early '80s when they were band mates in the popular South Florida band The Kids.

The show was filmed for the documentary about songwriters, "That's What I'm Doing Here," set for April 2013 release.

A legendary Austin singer-songwriter, Carter has been a fixture in the Texas town's music scene since the late '70s. He's best known as the writer of hits for artists who include Waylon Jennings and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Carter wrote the late blues legend Vaughan's only No. 1 hit, "Crossfire."

A guitar-clad Depp channeled both his "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie character Jack Sparrow and the rocker who inspired the Black Pearl captain -- the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards. Depp, with a feather in his hat and a cigarette dangling from his mouth, delighted the crowd, shaking hands with those lucky enough to be standing on his side of the stage.

It was a truly special show. In addition to the heavy dose of celebrity. the set included Bill Carter's hit, "Anything Made of Paper," and previewed his upcoming album, "Unknown," due out Jan. 15.
