Tired of all the twerking?
Too bad because twerk fan and famed producer Diplo plans to bring his digital dancehall project Major Lazer and other friends to Los Angeles for his sixth annual Mad Decent Block Party.
The event is part of a traveling music festival that includes acts from Matt & Kim and Big Gigantic to Dillon Francis. The one-day, eight-hour block party is slated to pop off at Los Angeles Center Studios on Saturday.
Mad Decent Block Party is named after founder Diplo's music label, which is known for championing micro-genres like Dub Step, Trap and Moobahton through the support of such acts as Riff Raff, The Partysquad and Liz — all of whom will be at Saturday's party.
The 2013 Mad Decent Block Party began in July in Canada and concludes with its 15th show Sunday in San Diego.
“It's been amazing,” said Walshy Fire of Major Lazer. “I wish we had more.”
Major Lazer, put together by Diplo, includes Walshy Fire and fellow DJ/producer Jillionaire. The group has headlined all Mad Decent Block Party shows, with the Los Angeles showing its 14th performance.
“It feels like a barbecue house party,” he said. “They're big events, but at the same time they're not like any typical festival. There's a level of closeness that's just awesome at these block parties.”
The bash has its roots in Philadelphia, where in its inaugural year a crowd of just 500 flocked in for the free outdoor music. But the parties have grown so large that for the first time this year fans must now purchase tickets in advance. (Tickets are still available for Los Angeles.)
“The concept of a free event is great, but when an event grows to a certain point, it backlashes,” said Mad Decent label manager Jasper Goggins. “People got angry because they couldn't get in. If we were still doing 500 people on a block in Philly and started to charge for it, that would be sad, but it's evolved into a mini-festival.”
While the bill boasts nine acts, special guests have been known to hop onstage, Goggins said, which adds to the allure of the event. For instance, electronic musician Skrillex and Diplo plan to do an exclusive set as their new group known as Jack U during the year's final block party on Sunday in San Diego. Locally, Walshy Fire promises fans they'll be in for a shocker during Major Lazer's performance on Saturday.
“We got a really cool surprise guest that'll make our set hilariously fun,” he said. “Believe me when I tell you, it's going to be good.”
One thing that won't be a surprise is the oversize transparent ball Major Lazer will be whipping out at the show. Walshy Fire hamsterballed over the audience at this year's Coachella Music & Arts Festival in Indio, and it has become a signature part of the group's show.
“It's one of those things our fans would be upset about if we didn't bring it. We've had people ask, ‘Were we not rowdy enough? Were we not good enough?' when we didn't bring it,” Walshy Fire said with a laugh.
Rumor has it Diplo is expected to crowd-surf in the bubble on Saturday.
“We go really hard on a lot of stuff,” Walshy Fire said. “Prepare for the mess.”
