Long Beach Locals Score A Silver Lake Shortcut

After graduating from the Joe Cocker School of Facial Theatrics, We Barbarians went on to receive high marks from the Eddie Vedder Institute of Dance, with a minor in Breeders bass lines, and a focus on flannel shirts. Long live Long Beach.

One time bandmates in The Colour, Nathan Warkentin, David Quon and Derek Huele (who has fantastically Wolverine-like hair) have re-formed as We Barbarians; A commanding trio of detached indie angst, amply filling each requirement for this genre of modern boy band.

Moody, grainy, and sufficiently loud, these local lads are plus on power proficiency, and have been impressing audiences and musical peers alike, having already toured with esteemed rockers the Cold War Kids and Les Savy Fav.

Clearly influenced by The Cure (and a bit by U2 though they probably wouldn’t admit it), multi-instrumentalist and lead singer Warkentin sounds appropriately Arcade Fire-ish, that is to say his voice works perfectly in context, though out of context he would likely be harassed by an animated Rock Band audience.

Their latest achievement is scoring a coveted, month long residency at local fame-incubator, the Silverlake Lounge, which kicked off last night with a respectably inspired performance and a good sized crowd.  They seemed sincere if not a bit withholding in their excitement to be there. Playing it cool is part of the job.

Pick up a copy of their self-released, debut EP, In The Doldrums, and catch a free show every Monday night in January at the Silverlake Lounge.
