Culture and commerce have always been the lifeblood of LA, and with the millennial makeover, Downtown is once again the heart of the city.

Culture & Recreation

When it comes to opera and the arts, Downtown takes center stage.

1.

Walt Disney Concert Hall

With pitch-perfect acoustics and an evil-lair exterior designed by architectural mastermind Frank Gehry, the LA Phil’s home gets our vote for the eighth wonder of the world.

2.

REDCAT

Built beneath the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the hepcat venue literally brings art to the underground with experimental films, plays and performances too outrageous to summarize in this space.

3.

Olvera Street

Every day is a fiesta at this old-timey Mexican marketplace where merchants sell south-of-the-border specialties and strolling mariachis serenade the packed plaza.

4.

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Grand Avenue

The pretension-free (well, almost) Museum of Contemporary Art brings a refreshing jolt of energy to the national art scene by throwing late-night parties and housing exhibits that don’t require a doctorate to appreciate.

5.

Japanese American National Museum

This is a small museum but it’s packed with history lessons, culture tidbits and interactive drum exhibits.

Dining

From American classics to foreign favorites with a twist, Downtown’s dining scene swerves adeptly from edgy new cuisine to old-school favorites.

1.

Blue Velvet

It’s hip, it draws a sexy crowd, and guess what? The food is excellent.

2.

Water Grill

Sure, it’s not Santa Monica, but the best seafood in LA may well be found here.

3.

Pacific Dining Car

Political power players, midnight munchers and beef-loving businessmen have at least one thing in common: They all dine at this 24-hour steakhouse, which has been refining the art of red-meat preparation since 1921.

4.

Sai Sai

As out of place as it is delicious, the low-key restaurant located in the luxurious Biltmore Hotel masterfully blends Latin flavors with contemporary Japanese cuisine.

5.

Philippe the Original

Not much has changed at the oldest restaurant in Los Angeles, including the price of coffee; it’s just 10 cents.

Nightlife

It’s like Hollywood, minus the velvet rope. And the attitude. And the overpriced drinks.

1.

The Edison

Built in the basement of a 101-year old building, the Edison mixes swank and hip with the greatest of ease. Note to those on a promising date: Find the leather couches under the renovated boiler for a little privacy.

2.

La Cita

This is the Downtown version of SkyBar, where artist DJs have transformed the formerly un-cool space into bumping, grinding hipster heaven.

3.

Club 740

A lushly renovated theatre sets the stage for rotating dance nights and live music acts.

4.

Roof Bar at the Standard Downtown

The aptly named Roof Bar is a ‘60s-style poolside lounge that offers a breathtaking view of both the LA skyline and its clientele.

5.

Bordello

As with many clubs Downtown, this is set in a renovated building. But this one is something special: aesthetically speaking, the owners are looking to reclaim the whorehouse vibe.

Shopping

Savvy tourists and bargain-hunting locals brave these bustling marketplaces in search of once-in-a-lifetime deals and shop-‘til-you-drop adventures.

1.

Santee Alley

Frauda handbags, Calvin Crime shades, exotic animals and pirated Johnny Depp pictures are all a steal at the infamous alley, where the line between shopping spree and crime spree is virtually nonexistent.

2.

California Jewelry Mart

With more than 200 dealers located along a four-block stretch, the Jewelry Mart has enough discount bling to satisfy even the most discerning hip-hop heavyweight or cost-conscious wedding planner.

3.

Grand Central Market

The oldest open-air market in Los Angeles is also the largest, with dozens of food vendors who will fill your stomach without emptying your wallet.

4.

Flower Mart

More than 80 vendors offer thousands of ways of saying you’re sorry.

5.

RIF

Sneaker aficionados know this is the place to get rare—and sometimes quite pricey—Nikes and collectible shoes.

Hotels

These cities-within-cities offer everything a guest could ever want within their hallowed halls.

1.

Figueroa Hotel

Have a Moroccan adventure (and strong drink) without leaving the city.

2.

The Standard Downtown LA

This is the coolest hotel Downtown, hosting athletes, Grammy nominees and locals willing to pay $200 for access to the Roof Bar.

3.

Bonaventure Hotel (home to Bonaventure Brewing Company)

These iconic glass towers have starred in blockbusters along with the Governator, and the Bonaventure is also home to a lively brew pub that serves its own suds.

4.

Millennium Biltmore Hotel

Another star of the silver screen, the palatial Biltmore Hotel has played host to presidents, Academy Awards ceremonies and countless film crews since opening its doors in 1923.

5.

Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza

Within walking distance of Downtown’s best sites, the mega-hotel has something for everyone: Free WiFi for corporate nomads working out of a suitcase, a Get Fit Kit for indoor athletes, and an elegant lounge to unwind between shows.
