Welcome to the Eastside, where women wear neo-Flashdance gear and guys sport Teenage Millionaire trucker caps. The prices can be surprisingly high and the feeling is always just a tad arch. The Irony Runs ThickArtists in self-mutilated clothing complain about corporate hegemony--sometimes while gobbling up designer gear.
2.
AtmosphereA large space with big names on the hangers and even bigger numbers on the price tags, this comfortable shop caters to young, well-off Eastsiders.
3.
oOoEverything looks like it could have originated in the '80s but not all of it did. Taking their cue from what's hot on the street, LA-based designers create new works that hang alongside vintage pieces.
4.
Zen TropaYoung, edgy and up-and-coming, the designs that hang on the racks here are, like their creators, on the verge of making it big. With styles from both indie LA artists and the runways of Paris, the looks here are all very high-end.
An Acquired TasteVermont has lost many of its more cult stores, but a few remain for creatures of the night.
2.
Y-Que Trading PostIts name, pronounced "ee-KAY," translates from Spanish to mean "so what." And what name would be more appropriate for a gift shop dedicated to creating humorous T-shirts that simplify the current state of politics in this country?
3.
Vinyl FetishThis record store specializes in goth, industrial, punk and '80s new wave collectibles. Vinyl Fetish also carries a nice mix of electro music and all its sub-genres. The vibe of the store is funky but the staff is friendly and helpful.
4.
SquaresvilleThrough the speedy gentrification of Los Feliz, this store has managed to hang in there. Which isn't that surprising, because their prices are excellent (you can still find stuff for under $10), and the racks are organized in a simple-to-peruse way.
Inspired GoodsNot all intellectuals are faux. Here's where neighborhood thinkers and artists go for raw materials.
1.
Blue Rooster Art SuppliesThe charm and customer service of this independently owned art-supply store make it a pleasant place to fill painting, drawing and sculpting needs.
3.
Skylight BooksNo elevator, no coffee shop, no Top-40 CDs and no children's playground: Skylight is a bookshop from the days before corporate takeovers.
