This 1920s architectural gem was built in homage to a pre-Columbian temple, and now hosts concerts, salsa and wrestling.

Once the home of Gershwin musicals, the Mayan reopened as a club in 1990 and has presented everything from salsa competitions to international superstar DJs like John Digweed to the hipster Mexican wrestling/burlesque fest Lucha Va Voom. Fridays feature a house-tribal-Spanish rock melange on the main floor and tropical tunes on the upper floor. Saturdays is usually home to salsa and merengue, with the upstairs pumping '80s disco and house. Saturday nights also offer $18 salsa lessons. —Matthew Miller
