LA institution Canter's deli has reached the height of hip with their decidedly downscale bar next door. What's better than dill pickles and beer at one in the morning?

Tucked away among the convalescent homes and Israeli groceries in the Fairfax district, and across the street from the more mature, less tattooed crowd lining outside Largo, The Kibitz Room has been a part of the LA music scene since lox and bagels first met and fell in love (The Wallflowers had their start here in the early ‘90s). Every Saturday night, the aspiring James Blunts of the world flock to warble at Dan Giles’ Singer-Songwriter Showcase, hoping this’ll be the night they’ll be discovered. The Kibitz Room’s low-key vibe and eclectic clientele means that some nights the crowd can be on the rough side, but there are always a couple of fashionable hipsters. Grab a cheap beer from the bar, order heaping platefuls of deli fare from Canter’s menu (try the Brooklyn Ave. with corned beef), sit down in one of the sticky vinyl booths, and check out Francine Robbins’ see-it-to-believe-it chanteuse act. You'll love every minute of it.—Amir Kenan
